Q. What’s the difference between a food connoisseur or a dieter and an eating disorder or food addict?

A. There are many different levels of food/eating problems.

It becomes a problem when it adversely interferes with one's life. Often one is a 'problem eater' when others are aware that there is some problem, but this type of person can have minimal insight into the total impact.

An eating disorder is defined as somebody who uses excessive food/starves despite awareness of associated negative consequences directly or indirectly related to its use.

There are usually many efforts that the addict/anorexic has made to control, limit or eliminate the problem, and these are frequently unsuccessful. The outcomes can be devastating and are often accompanied by varying (and sometimes overwhelming) levels of denial that there is an issue at all. Serious illness, medical problems and even death (in a small percentage of cases) may ensue.
